Stone Soup
Yesterday morning was a rainy dreary fall start to the day. It was a good soup day, or so it seemed. Just the perfect day for a little activity I was hoping to do with Ethan. We love going to the library. (Okay, Mommy loves the books at the library and Ethan loves the toys at the library. He's starting to love those books though!) During our last trek, we checked out the book, Stone Soup.
For those of you not familiar with the book, it's the tale of three hungry and weary soldiers who ask villagers for some food and place to rest. All the villagers have hidden their food and do not give the soldiers aid. The soldiers say that they will then just have to make stone soup. This rouses the curiosity of the poor villagers, so when the soldiers say the soup will be good, but would be even better with a little salt and pepper, they decide to help just a bit. Of course, the soup would be even better with carrots, cabbage, meat, and so on. The villagers happily give their food and soon a great feast is laid out. Everyone rejoices and the tired soldiers are given the best beds in the village, for surely this is the least that can be done for those that can make delicious soup from stones.
So, today Ethan and I made stone soup.
First, we put water (chicken broth, because Mommy can do things like that!) in the pot. Then we added two stones. Ethan immediately sniffed and went "Mmmmm good!" What a ham!
And yes, those stones were clean and boiled before we used them in the soup!
He's not having fun at all, is he?
Then we add some carrots.
Our simmering stone soup.
We had a blast and the soup was quite yummy! And then lo and behold, the sun came out and it turned into a beautiful day. Good soup and a pretty day. That's an overflowing cup of blessings!
