The Not So Happy Fireman
Once upon a time there was a little boy who loved to play fireman. Every day he would don his coat, his hat, his boot and his gloves and race around the drive way to protect his little community. He loved pretending and his little coat was growing small. So, his mama thought a new coat would be just the thing for a Halloween costume, since then he could play again each day. A kind friend even gave him a fire hat that matched his and was a better fit than the little yellow one he often perched on his head. But the little fireman did not like his new things. Well, not all of them. He liked the radio and ax that came with the new coat. And he could even be convinced to possibly wear the new coat. But the matching fire hat, alas was left to be a candy bowl for the upcoming evening of fun.
Halloween day came and his Mom gathered his gear, knowing the little fireman would need everything for his parade with his friends at school. But no. The little fireman shook his head. "I will not wear my coat, or my boots or my hat, " he said. "I will not parade with the others."
The other children arrived at school as dragons and princesses. There was even a friendly police officer and a friend with a familiar fireman's hat. But still the little boy refused to wear his costume. He trailed behind the others in their parade, without his boots, his hat or his coat.
That night, he knew the others would be out trick or treating. He happily put on his coat, his boots, his gloves, and his hat. He didn't want to hold the bag, or knock on the door, or say thank you, but he did want to wear the costume. He visited three neighbors and came home happily with his candy. He wore a smile most of the night, but his mama still is not sure of her "not so happy fireman"
Ready to help the neighborhood.
Mommy, do you know this pumpkin is on fire. Should I take care of it?
